Rave Magazine’s Geared Interview

The Rave interview………

Well who would have thunk it.  Me being interviewed by “Rave” magazine. I am honoured and humbled…Thank you RAVE! All I will say folks is that I did this interview over the phone with the lovely Denis (editor of the “Geared” section) after having consumed several of my Wife’s excellent Martinis.

Circa 1910-1920 Regal Parlor

picture-205_rs Here is yet another restored parlor and is my no means “just another” parlor. Solid rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, spruce top. Made by regal somewhere between 1910-1920.

Circa 1900′s Parlor

dscf2011_rs Cue the “Hallelujiah” music with the hearty American voiceover as you read this description:

“Spruce for adirondack top, honduran mahogany back and sides, Brazilian rosewood headstock faceplate, ebony fretboard and spanish cedar neck. But the best bit of all: dating back to have been made between 1900 and 1910 this smorgasboard of timber is over a century old!”

This is the result of really good timber doing the fusion dance and gifting the world with an amazing instrument. Enough said

Aria Acoustic

dscf1992_rs Solid spruce top, mahogany back and sides and a groovy little slotted headstock. This one has a nice deep voice with a cosy top end. Good strummer guitar.

$795

Aria Diamond Semi Acoustic

dscf1975_rs Here we have an early 70′s Aria Diamond. We refretted this baby and she has the slickest neck we’ve ever seem. The trem stays in tune like a mother and the pickups are nice and ballsy.

Come on in, have a play

Yamaha FG-140

dscf1941_rs This ol girl has survived a rough and rumble lifestyle courtesy of our friendly New Zealand neighbors. Touring around the southern island for years and years she certainly has taken a beating over time. This is of course the sort of beating that only love can provide and there is no need to involve the authorities.

She’s been strummed and played, bashed and plucked and has emerged, scars in tact and with a voice to prove it. A big booming bottom end with a loud mid-range and a subtle top. This is perfect for those alcohol fueled late night sing-alongs, or making your presence known amongst a group of rambunctious punters.

Its been fully restored by us and carries our guarantee of being awesome. So if you like to wear your battle wounds on your sleeve then come on in and have a play of this old thing.

Stats: Made in Japan in the 70′s, solid spruce top and solid mahogany back, sides and neck. Brought back to life by us

Yamaha 12 String

dscf1466_rs Sometimes we get “Old gals” through that just need a makeover and some lipstick before they’re ready for a new home. But then there’s girls that need a little more, shall we say…re building. This old geisha (she is made in Japan after all), has had the works: neck reset, refret, new bridge, the lot.

The result? fantastic, very loud! Great Tone and playability, the belle of the ball!

Priced at $895 it’s a giveaway!

Pictured with the lovely 12 string is also our K’ Yairi 12 string. Click here to see more

Roadkill Tele with Bigsby

dscf1198_rs This one is a mexican tele distressed and redressed. We added a single roller Fender bigsby, hand shaped the neck profile, refretted, reworked and remade it to really knock the socks of you tele-visioned guitarists out there.

This mexican tele is such a good guitar that we considered selling her “as is”…but where is the fun it that?!

So this is what we did: we refretted her, put a high output Bill Lawrence pickup in the neck, fitted a Bigsby trem with a tune-o-matic bridge and finally made her look and feel like she’d been in greasy, hot bars fir 50 years.

Tone? well Neil Young comes to mind. Is that any help?

$1850

Framus Acoustic

Roadkill J-Style Bass

dscf1566_rs We did the “roadkilling” on this bass body some 3 years ago! But it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that we “found” the matching components to complete her. Several players have praised the neck as being “fast”.  The bridge pickup has that stringy “bark” and the neck pickup is full of “Growl”. We’re very proud of this one, oh and did we mention that is has a handmade brass bridge?

$1595

Broadway Jazz Guitar

dscf1544_rs Those Krauts made, and continue to make, great things; porsches, VW’s, antibiotics, you name it they also made some pretty cool guitars.

This Bavarian masterpiece is lush!, we’ve retrofitted a P90 in the bridge and an acoustic soundhole pickup in the neck, the best of both worlds. We’ve also refretted her for maximum playability.

p.s The “Broadway” brand it the “house” brand of the Australian importer from way back in the 50′s.

$1549

Yamaha Lapsteel

dscf1521_rs What do you do with a guitar built like a brick shitter and a neck like a baseball bat?…Ah yes, you tun it into a lapsteel. Which is exactly what we did.
Made in Japan originally in the early 60′s, she’s strong and the tone is phat!

$895

1965 Gibson LGO

dscf1540_rs his one here is one for the ladies :)

That’s right a 1965 Gibson Ladies Guitar – O (mahogany top, back and sides.) But boys don’t let that stop you, boasting a beautifully resonant tone with great sustain it will have people of any gender giggling with anticipation at getting their hands on this one.

This is also our LR Baggs M1 active soundhole pickup tester guitar. Here is a video of Patty Atkinson playing some lovely blues chops with it.
