We see many an electric guitar come through the shop; stratocasters, telecasters, les pauls, SG’s, who have suffered “updating”. People think the tele they bought in 1965 is old fashioned and would greatly benefit from new pickups, new machine heads, new bridge, new nut etc and in doing so lose a part of its original beauty and character.

We’ve restored two mid 60′s telecasters this year that both suffered “refinishing”. Someone, somewhere along the line decided that the original finish was not to their liking and both stripped it back and then realised refinishing is much harder than it looks and gave up.

Cue challenge. On this guitar someone had slapped on paint stripper, tried to scrape it back and then walloped a coat of shellac over the mess.

The customer wanted it to be refinished Sonic Blue but with the stipulation that he still wanted it to look like it was from the 60′s.

With some subtle “roadwearing” to give it the hint of its half century lifespan we were quite happy with the result.

To fix this we routed a rebate into the top and bottom edge of the tele, filled out the rebate with pieces of old ash. Then re-routed a channel on top and bottom edge for the binding.

The customer wanted to see the original three tone magnifico sunburst. We sealed it and then thanks to Luke Kallquist and his fine skills with a spray gun, we had it.

Luckily the only atrocity was the the sanding. The components all worked fine and the guitar only needed a little work to bring her back to her former glory.

This latest creation is going to Luke’s very lucky cousin for his 21st birthday. An Australia Beefwood top, chambered mahogany body, mahogany and rosewood laminated neck, ebony fretboard and headstock overlay. Custom art deco styled fretmarkers, Bigsby tremolo device, supertron pickups,  and a tone that will punch you in the neck!

Late last year we were commissioned to make a T-Style, from scratch, for a customer as an engagement present to himself. He had a detailed list of what he wanted and with his design and ideas we set about creating the object of his daydreams.

3 months later, late on Christmas Eve, we had fully realized what he had imagined. With a specific body colour (Double Alabaster), headstock decal, scratchplate design, neck profile, radius and timber in mind we are glad to say he was happy with what we made.

But don’t take our word for it, here is what Peter had to say about it:

You Guys:

The whole process has been great – I really appreciate the time both of you took to talk to me about things and also the enthusiasm you both have for your work.  I like how your knowledge and interest for your craft comes through and that I could be included in that.  Due to your experience I learnt a lot, and was inspired to learn even more.  This has led me to have an even greater appreciation of what you have built and the skills it takes to do it and in turn my own playing has improved.  The welcoming way you treat people regardless of skill and knowledge was refreshing and stands out from many other places – Sarah almost feels compelled to learn thanks to the brief time she came in on Christmas eve when we collected the guitar.  That you could interpret my rough list of hopes and create something that met my aspirations is artful and should be recognised and commended.

The DiamondT-Style:

The guitar itself is fantastic.  The weight is nicely balanced and all connections are nice and sturdy.  The build quality is good and the finish excellent (I like how the grain can still be seen through the paint).  The neck is a work of art.  All my other guitars pale in comparison.  The shape is so comfortable.  The compound radius is fantastic and the feel phenomenal.  There was no settling in / getting used to period: it was incredibly easy to play from the moment I got it home. Frets are perfect and it is so easy for chords and for noodling away.  The tone is simply fantastic.  I call it the “Kathleen Turner” effect: when using the neck pickup she’s all sexy, throaty & warm (just like young Kathleen Turner), pop her into the middle and it is young Ms Turner impersonating a duck.  Then whack it into the bridge pickup and that baby growls and spits gravel at you – just like the Kathleen Turner of today. I love that neck and mid, but I’d still have a scotch with her in the bridge any time.  For the first time for me with electrics, the tone knob does something and I use it.  It’s fun to explore the different sounds and it is remarkable just how much I can achieve simply with the guitar and amp together. No need for pedals or the like. Just tweak the volume, pickups and tone and away you go.

The DiamondT-Style has exceeded all my expectations.  It has been a very rewarding experience for me and all I can do is encourage everyone to take the opportunity should it arise.  I never thought I would have a guitar built for me as I had always assumed it would be too expensive or simply unfeasible. I thank you both so much for your time and craft and I’m am so chuffed it all happens out of an old worker’s cottage here in Brisbane.  To have met the people that have made something I hold dear is a wonderful thing and I look forward to the ongoing relationship.

Late last year we had a customer (none other than Dave Caterall, rhythm guitarist for the Status Quo tribute band; Statoz Quo, check out their facebook here) commission us to make him a replica of Rick Parfitt’s tele. “Sure, no problem” we replied. Little did we know what was in store for us.

In circulation there are many Rick Parfitt Tele’s and each one is carefully dinged, hand aged, worn and beaten to exactly match the original. The benchmark had been set. We were ready.

You may have noticed the strings are not running on the standard tele saddle pieces. Because Rick plays with a 14-60-something gauge of string, a stop bar tailpiece is the only thing that could support that much tension!

So a retrofitted ashtray bridge and a stopbar tailpiece that we customized with some adjustment screws and correctly intoned grooves does the job nicely.

Sporting two P90′s (a Dog ear and a soap-bar) this thing has some killer crunch, but not so much so that a nice little jazz rendition won’t be out of the question.
